The acai berry (Euterpe oleracea) is a 'superfruit' native to a palm tree in the Amazon region of South America packed with valuable anti-inflammatory nutrients: anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, proto-catechic acid, procyanidins and epicatechin - in plus vitamin C, vitamin A and dietary fiber.

Acai berries resemble blueberries and have been a staple of native Brazilian tribes for thousands of years. Traditionally, acai is used to treat various disorders (digestive, cutaneous, etc.).

However, the small purple-colored acai berries have become very popular in recent years. They are praised by many naturopaths recognized to be particularly beneficial for health as well as for well-being.

Acai berries greatly promote diets, protect the skin from premature aging, reduce cardiovascular disease and the development of certain cancers.

Indeed, some studies have shown that acai is even richer in protective antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries or goji berry. In addition to providing many antioxidants, acai berry helps control appetite hormones, increase energy, and support many metabolic functions (body detoxification).

Moreover, to make them edible, they are soaked to soften the outer skin, then crushed to form a dark purple paste.

They have a pleasant taste similar to the taste of dark chocolate.

Finally, fresh acai berries have a short shelf life and are not available outside of where they are grown. They start to rot within 24 hours of being picked if left untouched.

For export, they are sold as frozen fruit puree or dried powder.

It's not every day that a superfood really tastes great, which is one of the reasons acai's popularity has taken off.

The acai berry has more to offer than antioxidants - it also supplies many other electrolytes, trace elements, amino acids, and even small amounts of essential fatty acids.

Acai is loaded with many nutrients, including:
  • Antioxidants (anthocyanins, polyphenols, vitamins A, C and E)
  • Healthy fats, including monounsaturated fats and omega fatty acids (including omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 and fatty acids like linoleic acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid)
  • Dietary fiber
  • Certain essential amino acids
  • Electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and manganese)
  • Plant sterols (B-sitosterol, campesterol and sigmasterol)
  • Other trace elements (iron, calcium, copper and zinc)
  • B vitamins (B1, B2 and B3)
